The Power of One Young Readers' Edition (Audible Audio Edition) Bryce Courtenay Humphrey Bower Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books

First, I'm a long time fan of the book. Years ago I lent my trade paperback to a friend who never returned it. In the meantime, I transitioned to mostly reading via Kindle. It's been an ongoing frustration that the only kindle version of the book is a young readers' condensed version. Finally, I decided to take a chance on the audiobook. I haven't listened to many audiobooks, so I didn't know if I'd like it or not. I loved it! Humphrey Bower, who reads the book, is absolutely brilliant. If you're a fan of the book or of Bryce Courtenay in general, this audiobook is a must have. I'd give it ten stars, if I could!

The Power of One Young Readers' Edition (Audible Audio Edition) Bryce Courtenay Humphrey Bower Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Books Reviews

Overall, I would say The Power of One is a very solid book. The Power of One is about a young boy named Peekay who throughout his life has to fight adversity as well as persevere through hardships. There are both things that I enjoy as well as dislike about this novel. First, I enjoy this book because I can relate to his young character because I am a young person as well. Furthermore, there are certain events that occur to Peekay and actions that he does which I can relate to. Additionally, the genre of this book is realistic fiction. This genre is one of my favorite genres along with fantasy fiction and science fiction. However, there are some factors about this book that I dislike. The first being that it is hard to understand key parts of the book such as the war going on throughout the book. As a result, I had to do additional research to understand concepts such as the Boer war. Also, there are many words and phrases that I have to refer to in the back of the book which interrupts my reading flow. I know some people find this interesting but I don't prefer to have the slang in the book. Altogether, this book is great, especially for young adults, and although it does have minor issues, it is definitely worth the time to read.
I loved this book. I bought it before a trip to South Africa. I love historical fiction and memoirs and reading about the places I visit enriches my experience. I was so engaged while reading this, couldn't put it down. It does contain some disturbing parts, so be warned. I gave it to my mother-in-law and she did not finish it, because it wasn't really her style. You might enjoy this if you like historical fiction, stories about overcoming hardships and coming of age novels.
While his wording is nothing to write home about, Bryce Courtenay’s The Power of One is an epic coming of age story that tells the story of a boy named Peekay. I won’t reveal the majority of the plot, however, Courtenay tells a compelling story of a white British boy growing up amongst the South African natives. He lives a life of loss and a world of oppression and bigotry. His dream to become the welterweight champion of the world is constantly blocked by his seemingly fanatical Chrisitan mother, the loss of those closest to him, and the social constraints of the late 1930s. Bryce Courtenay’s work is not poetic, however, it is quite moving. For somebody looking for a great story, I would certainly recommend this moving story. But for somebody looking for poetic words and something that builds on suspense and excitement, there is much to be desired. This moving coming of age is one of strife and pain. But it also shows courage and perseverance. It is not the writing, but the story that drives the plot. Although it can also be slow at times, the story of Peekay is one I would recommend as a good read.
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I first got it in 1989, when it was first published, and I have loved it ever since. I lost my first copy, so I needed a replacement. I think that this wonderful writer is so underrated, and it was so sad when he passed away within the past two years. You can finally buy his books on US, as opposed by going to UK or Canada. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and all of the rest of his books.
Absolutely one of the best novels I have ever read. The story and the characters are so memorable that I can see why it is called the Novel of South Africa!
This is a classic in my eyes. I love the poetry of this novel, and the word pictures Courtenay paints. This is a shining example of the 'power of positive thinking'.

Young white boy who endures humiliation and bullying in African residential school thru WW II. It demonstrates how good people come into one's life to mentor & love a child, forge his life for good. Included are the gardener (a Jew), a retired boxer (black), and piano teacher. The arts and the sport of boxing give him strength. He experienced violence daily because of his background.
